The Ithaca Planning Board approved Cornell University’s plan to build two synthetic turf fields on Tuesday, despite protests from environmental advocates. The board voted 4-0 to move forward with the Meinig Fieldhouse Project, which includes one indoor and one outdoor turf field.
Environmentalists raised concerns over PFAS chemicals, commonly found in synthetic turf, and potential nanoplastic pollution. Despite these concerns, the board determined the project would not cause significant environmental harm, avoiding the need for a deeper environmental review.
Cornell plans to use plant-based infill for the outdoor field and retain crumb rubber for the indoor field, addressing some of the environmental concerns raised. Athletes praised the decision, citing the need for additional training space.
