Fleming Man Arrested for Burglary and Grand Larceny in Cayuga County

A Fleming man was arrested early on August 20, 2024, after allegedly breaking into a business in the Town of Aurelius, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Deputies responded to a commercial burglary alarm and found Duane M. Lerkins Jr., 52, standing next to a U-Haul truck parked by a warehouse at the business. An investigation by the patrol and Criminal Investigations Division revealed that Lerkins had rented the U-Haul and was attempting to steal property from inside the warehouse.

Lerkins was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny. He was arraigned at CAP Court on August 20, and is currently being held at Cayuga County Jail without bail.
