Teachers gather at Fair Haven Beach to tackle Great Lakes climate challenges

Educators from across New York State will converge at Fair Haven Beach State Park on Friday, August 16 for a professional development workshop focused on the impacts of climate change on the Great Lakes and strategies for adapting to these challenges. The workshop, hosted by New York Sea Grant and its partners, aims to equip teachers with the tools to create place-based curricula that address environmental issues affecting Great Lakes communities.

The event will feature presentations from experts at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the National Weather Service, who will discuss rising water levels, decreasing ice coverage, and the increasing frequency of severe storms. Teachers will also participate in hands-on activities, including a walking tour to examine local shoreline resilience efforts led by New York Sea Grant’s Coastal Processes and Hazards Specialist, Roy Widrig.

The workshop, which offers Continuing Education credits, is part of a series aimed at fostering environmental stewardship among educators. “Our goal is to provide teachers with the knowledge and resources to develop lessons that address the challenges facing the Great Lakes and its watershed communities,” said Nate Drag, Great Lakes Literacy Specialist with New York Sea Grant.
