Jasper-Troupsburg school officials hope to relocate after second major flood in three years

The Jasper-Troupsburg Junior/Senior High School in Steuben County suffered further damage from flash flooding on August 9, adding to the destruction first caused by Tropical Storm Fred in 2021.

The school has been closed since the initial flooding, with restoration plans underway after FEMA approved full funding for repairs and flood mitigation last November. However, following the latest flood, the district is asking FEMA to reconsider its decision and instead support relocating the school to a safer site.

In addition to the relocation request, the district plans to seek amended funding for mitigation efforts on the school’s sports fields. Cleanup efforts are set to begin to prevent safety hazards at the current site.

Since 2021, students have been attending classes at the former Canisteo-Greenwood Middle School, which was reopened to accommodate them.
