Cornell set to welcome new students with week of orientation and events

Cornell University is preparing to welcome nearly 8,400 new and returning students to campus for the fall semester, kicking off with a week of orientation events starting August 19. The university’s detailed move-in process will ensure a smooth transition, with new students arriving on August 19-20, followed by returning students from August 22-25.

This year’s arrivals will witness significant updates to Balch Hall, one of Cornell’s historic residence halls. After its first major renovation in six decades, North Balch will house new residents, while work continues on South Balch, set to reopen in spring 2025. The renovation honors the hall’s storied past, including nods to notable former residents like Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’54, while introducing modern amenities and safety features.

The orientation week, designed to help new students integrate into campus life, will feature events like the Big Red Welcome Fest on Ho Plaza and the First-Year Festival. The week culminates with the New Student Convocation on August 25, featuring speeches from Interim President Michael I. Kotlikoff and other university leaders, followed by a celebration barbecue.

Family Orientation programs will run concurrently, offering families insights into their students’ new academic environment and a chance to connect with Cornell’s leadership.
