Inflation still frustrating Americans: Why do consumers not feel change?

Despite signs of economic recovery, many Americans continue to feel the sting of inflation, even as it slows. While the stock market has rebounded and unemployment remains low at 4.3%, consumers are grappling with the cumulative rise in costs since the pandemic, especially for essentials like food and gas.

Though average wages have outpaced inflation over the past year, the lingering effects of price increases have left many households feeling financially strained. “The fact that prices aren’t rising as fast doesn’t comfort consumers who want to see them drop,” says economist Scott Hoyt.

Shifts in spending habits reflect this sentiment, with consumers increasingly opting for discount stores and generic brands. As pandemic-era savings dwindle, the financial cushion many relied on has significantly thinned, keeping economic anxieties high.
