Trump, Vance argue they should have influence over fed policy

Former President Donald Trump has reignited debate over presidential influence on Federal Reserve policy, asserting that the president “should at least have a say” in interest rate decisions. During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump criticized the Fed’s past decision-making, suggesting his business experience gives him better instincts than those at the central bank.

Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, echoed this sentiment, arguing in a recent interview that interest rate policy “should fundamentally be a political decision.” This stance challenges the traditional independence of the Federal Reserve, which operates without direct political influence to maintain economic stability.

Vice President Kamala Harris sharply disagreed, emphasizing the importance of the Fed’s autonomy and stating that she would never interfere in its decisions if elected. The Fed’s independence has long been a cornerstone of U.S. economic policy, aimed at shielding monetary decisions from political pressures.

Trump’s renewed focus on the Fed comes as he continues to criticize the institution, despite having appointed its current chair, Jerome Powell, in 2018. His remarks underscore a contentious history with the central bank, particularly over interest rate policies during his presidency.
