Seneca Falls has officially become a “sister city” with Tenafly, New Jersey, both sharing a historic connection to women’s suffrage leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The Town Board approved the designation on Tuesday, following a proposal by local attorney and preservationist Emil Bove.
Stanton, born in Johnstown, NY, and later a resident of Seneca Falls, played a pivotal role in organizing the first women’s rights convention in 1848. She later moved to Tenafly, where she continued her advocacy until 1887.
This new sister city relationship strengthens ties between Stanton’s key residences and supports efforts to recognize these sites as a non-contiguous national park. The designation underscores the shared heritage and historical significance of both communities in the women’s rights movement.
