Comprehensive Guide to VA Surviving Spouse Benefits Beyond Monthly Payments

While many know about the monthly payments provided to surviving spouses of veterans, fewer are aware of the additional benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Surviving spouses of veterans are entitled to various benefits beyond the standard monthly Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) payments. The DIC, amounting to $1,340 per month, is available to spouses of military members who died in service or from service-related injuries. Additionally, this benefit can extend to those whose veteran spouse had a total disability rating under specific conditions. Eligibility criteria include being married to the veteran before January 1, 1957, or within 15 years of discharge from the service period that caused the death, among others.

Apart from DIC, eligible surviving spouses can receive a survivor’s pension with aid and attendance, which supports dependents of deceased wartime veterans. This benefit requires that the veteran served at least 90 days of active duty with one day during wartime and was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. The surviving spouse’s countable income must be below the annual limit set by law, with the VA paying the difference in 12 equal monthly installments.

Healthcare is another critical benefit provided through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). This program covers spouses or surviving spouses of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to service-connected conditions or who died from such conditions. While CHAMPVA requires no premiums, co-pays are applicable, and eligibility can be affected by marital status changes.

Additionally, surviving spouses may qualify for a VA home loan guaranty, allowing them to buy, build, or improve a home with competitive interest rates and no down payment. This guaranty covers a portion of the loan, making it easier to secure favorable loan terms.

These comprehensive benefits underscore the VA’s commitment to supporting surviving spouses beyond monthly payments, ensuring financial stability and access to essential services.
