After a couple of days off, the New York Yankees returned to action on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium and split a doubleheader with the Los Angeles Angels, winning Game 1, 5-2, before falling, 8-2, in the nightcap.
Game 1 Recap
New York scored all five runs in the first four innings. Oswaldo Cabrera hit his seventh home run of the season. Anthony Volpe and Alex Verdugo had RBI doubles, while Austin Wells and Aaron Judge added RBI singles.
Luis Gil tossed five shutout frames on a career-high 107 pitches. The right-hander improved to 12-5 with a 3.06 ERA this season.
Enyel De Los Santos and Jake Cousins each gave up a run, but Luke Weaver and Clay Holmes locked it down over the final two innings, and Holmes secured his 24th save of the season.
Game 2 Recap
Will Warren made his second Major League start and allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings, including a grand slam in the second inning.
New York had opportunities to cut the deficit and make the game interesting but went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine on base.
DJ LeMahieu put the Yankees on the board in the second with a run-scoring single before Gleyber Torres added a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
