Canandaigua City Council voted unanimously to reduce pickleball hours at Sonnenberg Park following complaints from residents about noise and nighttime play. Effective immediately, the eight pickleball courts on Howell Street will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., ending two hours earlier than previously allowed.
Local residents expressed concerns about the noise from late-night games, including the sound of plastic balls hitting paddles and car headlights illuminating the courts after dark. These complaints were raised in a meeting with Ward 1 City Councilor Michael Mills, leading to a review by the Council’s Environmental Committee.
The popularity of pickleball prompted the city to convert tennis courts to pickleball courts in 2023. The council hopes the new hours will balance residents’ peace with the sport’s growing appeal.
