Eddie Marte, the ringleader in the brutal 2021 torture and murder of a New York City man, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Friday in Chemung County. Marte was convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Juan Jose Gotay, whose body was found in Pennsylvania in April 2021. He refused a plea deal and was found guilty after a week-long trial in March.
District Attorney Weeden Wetmore described how Marte and accomplices kidnapped and tortured Gotay before leaving his body bound and disfigured. Marte is already serving a 15-year sentence for a separate kidnapping case.
The sentencing marks a significant step in concluding the case, as accomplices Malik Weems and Thomas Bovaird accepted plea deals last year. Another suspect, Kavon Sanders, awaits trial for his role in the murder.
