The Coddington Road Community Center in Tompkins County will double its childcare capacity after securing a $4.2 million state grant, announced by New York State Assemblymember Anna Kelles. The funding will support the center’s expansion, which aims to alleviate the area’s “childcare desert” status.
Executive Director Heather Mount said the new wing will accommodate up to 46 additional children, though the waiting list of 340 remains daunting. The expansion includes new classrooms, a gymnasium, and a community room.
Construction began this spring after pandemic delays, with completion expected early next year. The project reflects a significant investment in workforce and economic development, according to Kelles.
