LETTER: Concerns with Cayuga Nation Court

The following is a letter to the editor written by Paul Meyer. Submissions for consideration can be sent to news@fingerlakes1.com.

I am writing to comment on the advertised “Staff Report” Article written about “Cayuga Nation court orders turnover of Pipekeepers property after long legal battle.”

The “Staff Report” was factually seriously flawed from the initial unsubstantiated premise asserting that, “The Nation’s Court, maintaining transparency and fairness….”  To be sure, the Staff Report is referring to the Clint Halftown Court that He refers to as the Cayuga Nation Court. The article should have mentioned that the actual Cayuga Nation members have a completely different long honored judicial tradition that has kept a system of Clan Mothers, Chiefs, and member Clans to maintain a system of justice that includes all.

From the start, numerous Cayuga Members are also saying that a Federal Representative of the Cayuga Nation does not imply or somehow make Mr. Halftown, or anyone in the future appointed this somewhat clerical position, an absolute ruler of the Nation. Cayuga members are vocally saying that Halftown never had any type of open election by an independent polling. They say Halftown self rigged and selected letters that he claims support his claim to lifetime self leadership. They say these letters were tied to financial payments that were withheld unless the letters were signed.  When is the next “election”? Any open and fair government has some type of term limit. Where are the member open meetings and complete transparent financial statements that list all distributions of all claimed Cayuga Nation operations? Halftown has displayed financial qualities of leadership; however, the skills of communicating and including other interested parties have been his struggle.   It unfortunately does not stop with these concerns; but includes bulldozed buildings and physical brutality.

Attached are open public Court records that clarify that the “Cayuga Nation” Judge was not elected by nor is He a Cayuga Nation Member.  This “Judge” was hired and can be fired solely by Halftown and was certified by Halftowns Mother Sharon.  Hardly a “transparent and fair” process or reporting.
