The Japanese government has mandated Toyota Motor Corp. to implement “drastic reforms” following the discovery of new violations in vehicle certification procedures. The transport ministry’s corrective order on Wednesday revealed intentional misconduct and irregularities in seven additional models.
Toyota stated that the order requires substantial changes to ensure proper certification practices. The automaker is verifying compliance for the affected models and assured customers that vehicle use is safe.
Earlier this month, Toyota reported no new misconduct beyond cases disclosed in June. The June admissions involved three production models, including the Corolla Fielder and Yaris Cross, and discontinued versions of four others.
The transport ministry’s industry-wide review was prompted by a safety test scandal at Toyota’s Daihatsu unit. The ministry also alerted international authorities about six models with irregularities certified abroad. Toyota plans to resume production for the compliant models by September.
