Former Newark Reds Baseball star Ben Cowles was traded from the New York Yankees to the Chicago Cubs along with Jack Neely in exchange for reliever Mark Leiter Jr., according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Mets split doubleheader with Braves The Yankees had been searching for a swing-and-miss guy for the bullpen and they finally found him. Leiter Jr., 33, has a 37% whiff rate this season and 53 strikeouts in 36.1 innings.
The 24-year-old Cowles was drafted by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.
He was hitting .294/.376/.472 with nine home runs and 51 RBI with the Double-A Somerset Patriots over 88 games this season but is currently on the seven-day injured list.
Cowles graduated from Newark in 2018 and played for the Newark Pilots of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2018 before attending the University of Maryland.
