A New York State Police recruit was arrested on July 23 after attacking a training officer and attempting to seize his firearm. The incident occurred at the State Police Academy at Cazenovia College when recruit Jose L. Valeriano, 22, of Hyde Park, expressed a desire to resign.
Valeriano reportedly began behaving erratically and lunged at the training officer, grabbing his firearm. The officer, with assistance from other academy staff, subdued Valeriano. The officer sustained a minor injury, was treated at a hospital, and later released.
Valeriano was charged with second-degree assault and attempted second-degree robbery, both Class D felonies. He was arraigned, posted $2,500 bail, and released on July 24. The case will be presented to a Madison County grand jury.
