In response to a dramatic increase in tornadoes across New York, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is advocating for $30 million in federal funding to expand the Mesonet weather forecasting system.
“New York has seen over 20 tornadoes just this month, with 10 occurring in a single day,” Schumer said Monday, highlighting the urgent need for improved forecasting capabilities. The Mesonet network, established post-Hurricane Sandy, includes 127 stations across upstate New York and provides critical data on temperature, wind speeds, and other weather conditions.
The proposed funding aims to enhance Mesonet technology and increase the number of stations, providing forecasters with more precise and timely information to better predict severe weather events.
