A new proposal from the New York State Education Department could allow boys to compete on girls-only sports teams in schools that don’t offer separate boys’ teams, raising concerns among administrators.
The policy, which aims to promote equity, would let boys try out for girls’ softball, field hockey, and volleyball teams. Critics, however, worry it might undermine opportunities for female athletes and pose safety risks.
“The changes could discourage female participation,” said White Plains School Superintendent Joseph Ricca. The Board of Regents will vote on the proposal in September, following a public comment period that ended in July.
