Social Security urges account holder to switch to Login.gov

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is urging millions of users to transition their online “my Social Security” accounts to Login.gov for continued access. This change, aimed at enhancing security and streamlining the login process, affects those who created accounts before September 18, 2021.

The SSA announced that all users would soon need either a Login.gov or ID.me account to access their Social Security information. While over 5 million have already transitioned, approximately 46 million of the 86 million account holders still need to make the switch.

“We have not set a final deadline for legacy accounts to transition,” an SSA spokesperson said. This initiative also addresses the issue of long wait times for the SSA’s 800 number, which averaged 24 minutes in April, down from 42 minutes in November.

Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley highlighted the benefits of the upgrade, stating, “We’re excited to transition to Login.gov to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies.” Current Login.gov or ID.me account holders do not need to take any action. Existing my Social Security users are encouraged to log in and follow prompts to transition to Login.gov, ensuring uninterrupted access to their benefits and services.
