COVID-19 hospitalizations are increasing in New York, prompting health officials to urge continued precautions. New omicron strains, called FLiRT variants, are spreading.

Health experts and pharmacy operators have noted a sharp rise in COVID-19 test sales. They maintain that handwashing is one of the most-effective ways to combat COVID-19, along with vaccination.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office reported higher hospitalization rates than last year but lower than in 2022. Despite the surge, Smoller advises living life with caution and getting boosters if eligible.
