The Auburn Planning Board has approved the construction of an 80-bed homeless shelter on Grant Avenue, replacing the current 16-bed facility. The decision came after a seven-month review process, with the board voting 3-1 in favor of the project.

The new three-story shelter, proposed by Housing Visions, will provide more interior space and on-site services to reduce outdoor loitering. The project has faced mixed reactions from residents, some of whom are concerned about its impact on local businesses and increased crime.

The shelter’s approval is seen as a crucial step to address the growing homelessness problem in the community. Cayuga County has supported the project with $1 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds, highlighting the urgent need for expanded homeless services in the area.
