Upstate NY health plans support Medicare Advantage legislation

  • Staff Report

Upstate New York health plans are backing bipartisan legislation to protect benefits and care access for over 400,000 Medicare Advantage enrollees. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and MVP Health Care support the bill, endorsed by several local Congress members.

A recent change in how the federal government sets hospital reimbursement rates led to higher Medicare Wage Index rates for upstate hospitals. This increased costs for nonprofit health plans without additional federal funding, potentially affecting Medicare Advantage affordability.

The legislation aims to adjust reimbursement benchmarks to keep regional Medicare Advantage plans viable, ensuring members retain benefits and access to quality care. Excellus BCBS President Jim Reed and MVP Health Care CEO Chris Del Vecchio emphasized the importance of the bill for maintaining affordable, high-quality Medicare Advantage programs.
