DEC advises on bear safety as population grows

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) reports an increase in the bear population over the past two decades, leading to more frequent human-bear encounters.

To reduce the risk of attracting bears, the NYSDEC advises removing bird feeders, securing trash cans, and cleaning grills after use. Bears are drawn to food sources like unsecured garbage, bird feeders, pet food, and messy grills.

If you encounter a nuisance bear, call 911 for immediate danger or contact the DEC for non-emergencies at 1-844-DEC-ECOs. For more bear safety tips, visit the NYSDEC website.
