Supreme Court May Allow Emergency Abortions in Idaho

  • Staff Report

The Supreme Court could soon allow emergency abortions in Idaho, according to a draft opinion obtained by Bloomberg News. The decision would reinstate a lower court’s ruling that permits hospitals to perform abortions when necessary to protect a woman’s health.

This development is a potential victory for the Biden administration, which argued that federal law requires hospitals to provide emergency care, including abortions, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Idaho’s strict abortion ban currently only allows the procedure when a woman’s life is in danger.

Despite this, some abortion rights advocates remain cautious. They warn that the Supreme Court could still end emergency abortion care in the future. The court has not officially released its opinion yet, and the ongoing litigation will continue.
