New York Continues Illegal Cannabis Shop Enforcement Shutting Down Even More

More legal cannabis dispensaries are opening across New York as the state intensifies efforts to shut down illegal ones, according to the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM).

Following a recent overhaul, the OCM and local governments now have the authority to close illegal cannabis shops. So far, 143 illegal stores have been shut down, with over 3,200 pounds of cannabis worth about $30 million seized. Police padlock the doors of these shops and confiscate illegal products.

The OCM says closing illegal shops helps eliminate the black market and boosts legal businesses. Currently, 137 legal dispensaries are open, with hundreds more licenses pending. In areas where illegal shops were closed, sales at legal dispensaries rose by 27%.
