Community Gathers After Teen Drowns in Erie Canal

Wilson Augustave Jr., 17, tragically drowned in the Erie Canal in Newark, leaving the community in mourning.

The community gathered after the 17-year-old’s passing, where family and friends talked about Augustave, as well as the grief they will carry forward. Photos and video of the vigil held in the village were shared to social media, showing the outpouring of community support for the teen’s family.

Friends have created a memorial with balloons, stuffed animals, and flowers where Wilson drowned. They remembered him as a bright and funny person with a big heart. The hashtag #LoveForWilson is being used to honor his memory. The family is thankful for the outpouring of support and is planning a memorial.

Wilson Augustave Jr. was a junior at Newark High School.
