  • Staff Report

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), along with partners from other states and Canadian provinces, has kicked off the annual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Landing Blitz. Running from June 26 through July 6, the campaign aims to educate boaters about preventing the spread of harmful aquatic species.

The effort includes outreach at hundreds of water access sites across the Great Lakes and Northeast regions. DEC Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar highlighted the importance of initiatives like the AIS Landing Blitz in protecting New York’s water bodies. “We aim to educate boaters on how to Clean, Drain, and Dry their watercraft to prevent the spread of invasive species,” Mahar said.

Last year’s campaign involved 1,100 volunteers and reached over 150,000 people. For more information on the AIS Landing Blitz and how to participate, visit the Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Landing Blitz webpage.
