Mets hold off Yankees in Subway Series opener

The Mets (38-39) held off the Yankees (52-29), 9-7, in the Subway Series opener on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Gerrit Cole gave up four home runs and allowed six runs in four innings. Mark Vientos hit two homers off Cole, while Harrison Bader and Brandon Nimmo also took him deep.

Aaron Judge launched a grand slam, his Major League-leading 29th home run of the season, and had an RBI double. Austin Wells added a run-scoring single.

David Peterson struck out eight Yankees over 4.1 innings while allowing a run on three hits.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. Luis Gil will take the ball for the Yankees and Sean Manaea will take the mound for the Mets.
