Heat Wave Triggers Surge in ER Visits in New York

  • Staff Report

Hospitals across New York are seeing a sharp increase in heat-related emergency room visits due to a severe heat wave gripping the state.

Emergency rooms in New York have reported a 500 to 600% spike in visits for heat-related illnesses, especially among the very young, elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. Certain medications, like antihistamines and blood pressure drugs, can also increase vulnerability to heat.

Health officials urge residents to stay in air-conditioned places, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. It’s also important to check on elderly neighbors and those with chronic health conditions during this time.
