New Yorkers Encouraged to Apply for Free Air Conditioners Through HEAP

Eligible New Yorkers can apply for a free air conditioner or fan with installation included through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). The Cooling Assistance Benefit opened for applications on April 15 and will remain open until August 31.

Approved applicants can receive up to $800 for a window unit or fan, or up to $1,000 for an existing wall sleeve unit.

To qualify, households must meet specific income guidelines, receive benefits such as SNAP or Temporary Assistance, and have at least one member with a medical condition worsened by extreme heat or a vulnerable member like an elderly person or young child.
