Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that her administration has closed 114 illegal cannabis stores since May, following a major overhaul of the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). The Cannabis Enforcement Task Force is leading these efforts.

Governor Hochul highlighted that shutting down these unlicensed shops has boosted sales for legal cannabis stores by 27% from May to June. The task force, which includes state police and the Department of Taxation and Finance, works with landlords to evict illegal dispensaries and penalize those who rent to them.

As of now, New York has 135 licensed cannabis dispensaries. The state has seized over $29 million in illegal products from the closed stores. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act was signed into law on March 31, 2021.
