Historic Penn Yan cupola gets new home for restoration

The nearly 130-year-old cupola from the historic Empire State Wine Cellars has been moved to a temporary location for refurbishment. Its permanent home and future use are still undecided.

On May 30, the cupola was relocated from Fireman’s Field in Penn Yan to the Hoover property in Jerusalem. The non-profit Cupola Restoration Project of Penn Yan aims to restore the structure.

The cupola, originally atop the Empire State Wine Co. building on Keuka Lake, served as a guide for steamboats during its winery’s heyday.

The building was demolished in the 1990s, but the cupola was preserved and recently moved for restoration. Fundraising efforts are ongoing, with $60,000 already pledged for the project.
