Mets hold off Padres in series opener

The New York Mets (31-37) plated two early runs and held on for a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres (37-36) in the series opener on Friday night at Citi Field.

J.D. Martinez smoked a two-run double to right field off Padres right-hander Matt Waldron in the third inning, and that proved to be the difference despite San Diego getting a run in the fifth on a Jackson Merrill solo shot.

Sean Manaea surrendered the lone run over five innings while striking out seven. Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman, Sean Reid-Foley, and Edwin Díaz combined for four scoreless.

Box Score

Jose Quintana will take the ball on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. as the Mets look to take the first two games of this three-game series.
