Former Governor Andrew Cuomo returned to the public eye this week, testifying before Congress about his controversial executive order that sent COVID-19 patients to nursing homes. On the same day, Cuomo’s team filed a lawsuit against the New York State Comptroller and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli for not reimbursing all his legal fees.

Additionally, a federal judge supported the New York Attorney General’s argument of “sovereign immunity,” which blocks Cuomo’s legal team from accessing the full investigation into the former governor. These legal battles are part of Cuomo’s effort to clear his name after the dual scandals of COVID-19 nursing home deaths and misconduct allegations that ended his administration.

Cuomo’s legal actions continue to involve significant costs, with the state spending nearly $11.5 million on his defense since January 2020. Cuomo’s spokesperson criticized the ruling that prevents access to the investigation documents, indicating potential appeals are being considered.
