NYSUT praises max classroom temperature bill after passage by lawmakers

NYSUT President Melinda Person praised the Legislature for passing a bill to set maximum temperatures in school buildings and indoor facilities.

“Extreme heat is a real danger to our students and educators,” Person said. “We applaud state legislators for recognizing the severity of its impact in our schools. Our children deserve classrooms where they can focus on learning, not on surviving sweltering temperatures.”

NYSUT collected reports from over 700 educators during the 2023-24 school year about excessive classroom heat. To raise awareness, NYSUT even set up a portable sauna in the Capitol last month to demonstrate the conditions to lawmakers.
