This new sanctuary, adjacent to Jefferson, Oswego, Cayuga, and Wayne counties, will preserve the region’s maritime history and promote research, education, and tourism. Brenda Mallory, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, highlighted the sanctuary’s role in President Biden’s conservation efforts.

The sanctuary features 41 shipwrecks and one submerged aircraft, some of the best-preserved in the world. NOAA will work with local partners and Indigenous governments to manage the site and promote its cultural significance.
