Mason Jorgensen, a senior from Newark and student at Wayne Technical and Career Center (WTCC), excelled in the New York State Thruway Cup welding competition, taking first place in three of the four categories. The competition was presented by the American Welding Society and sponsored by The Lincoln Electric Company.

“Mason’s determination is exceptional,” said Jason Johnston, welding instructor at WTCC. “His great hand-eye coordination and extensive practice set him apart.”

Jorgensen, who plans to start his own business, Major Mobile Welding, said the competition proved that “hard work pays off.” He credited his success to his instructors at WTCC.

The competition included students from across the state, with regional contests held in Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Albany. Jorgensen competed in various welding techniques and advanced through the academic portion. The event aimed to celebrate the skills of high school students entering the workforce.

The New York State Thruway Cup will be held annually, highlighting talented students from the WTCC and other tech centers.
