Hochul proposes smartphone ban in schools across New York

New York classrooms may soon look different as Governor Kathy Hochul pushes for a ban on smartphones in schools statewide. The proposed change would allow students to carry only phones without internet access.

Currently, the idea is just a proposal, but it has sparked discussions among parents and students about its potential impact.

While many students understand the drawbacks of social media, they still see smartphones as essential for contacting parents in emergencies. Others disagree citing the availability of school-provided laptops and iPads.

Governor Hochul even suggests using flip phones, which allow calls and texts without internet access. This proposal may be considered in the state’s next legislative session in January.
