Things got scary in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the New York Mets (25-35) held on for an 8-7 victory over the Washington Nationals (27-32) in the series opener on Monday night.

Manager Carlos Mendoza asked Adam Ottavino to get the final three outs with the Mets holding a three-run lead, but he did not get the job done. The right-hander recorded just one out and allowed two runs on two hits before Jake Diekman closed it out.

Mark Vientos went 2-for-4 with a solo shot, his fifth home run of the season. Jose Iglesias collected three hits and drove in a run. Luis Torrens picked up his first hit as a Met with a two-run double. Harrison Bader plated two runs, while Francisco Lindor added an RBI single.

Tylor Megill was charged with five runs (four earned) over five innings.

Box Score

The Mets will try to win the series on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. with David Peterson on the mound.
