Seneca Falls begins waterfront revitalization effort

  • Staff Report

The Town of Seneca Falls has started developing a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) to enhance recreational, social, and economic opportunities along the Seneca-Cayuga Canal and Cayuga Lakefront.

Funded by the New York Department of State, the LWRP planning process is being guided by a 20-member Waterfront Advisory Committee. This committee includes local stakeholders from tourism, environmental conservation, business, and town officials. They are currently inventorying assets, challenges, and opportunities along the town’s waterways.

“The LWRP will help us create economic opportunities while protecting our shoreline’s ecological conditions,” said Town Supervisor Frank Schmitter. “We invite residents and stakeholders to help shape the future of our waterfront.”

The planning process, which began in fall 2023, will take several years. Once completed, the projects identified in the plan will be eligible for state funding, including grants through the Department of State’s LWRP Program.

A public forum is planned for June 17 at the National Women’s Hall of Fame. The community is encouraged to participate and can access a survey at tinyurl.com/SenecaFallsLWRP.
