The Red Jacket school district is set to choose a new mascot name by the end of June.
Currently known as the Indians, the district must change its mascot due to a mandate from the State Education Department. A committee will meet on May 30 to review survey results from residents, students, staff, and alumni. The final three name options are Cardinals, Bears, and Rail Hawks.
School officials said the survey data is being carefully reviewed to ensure each person voted only once. The committee will then make a recommendation to the Board of Education. Other districts like Waterloo, Canandaigua, and Romulus have already changed their mascots to comply with the state’s mandate.
