Anthony Rizzo’s eighth-inning error proved costly for the New York Yankees (37-19) as they fell 4-3 to the Los Angeles Angels (21-33) in the series opener on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium.

Former Yankee Willie Calhoun led off the eighth with a single, and later in the inning, Luis Rengifo reached base on a fielding error by Rizzo with two outs. Clay Holmes entered for what would have been a four-out save, but on the first pitch, he allowed a go-ahead, two-out, two-run double to Taylor Ward, and that was the difference as the Yankees went down in order in the ninth.

Juan Soto drove in two of New York’s three runs with his 15th home run of the season and an RBI double. Austin Wells plated the other run with an RBI double.

Nestor Cortes surrendered a two-run homer to Kevin Pillar over 5.1 innings.

Box Score

The Yankees will try to snap their two-game skid on Wednesday with Luis Gil on the bump. The first pitch is slated for 9:38 p.m.
