Yankees drop series finale to Padres

The New York Yankees could not complete the three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park as they fell 5-2. 

New York (37-18) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on Juan Soto’s RBI double, but San Diego (28-28) answered with four runs in the home half and added another in the seventh to salvage the series finale.

Alex Verdugo smacked his seventh home run of the season in the ninth.

Clarke Schmidt threw five scoreless before running into trouble in the sixth, allowing two runs (one earned). Victor Gonzáelez surrendered two runs, and Caleb Ferguson gave up one.

The Yankees will get the day off Monday before they open a three-game road series with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
