Sheriff Jim Allard announced that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services has awarded the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office a $665,000 Technology Grant. The grant will enhance the department’s crime scene investigation and intelligence capabilities.

The funding will be used for three mobile and fixed license plate readers, a new drone for documenting fires, crash scenes, and assisting in SWAT deployments and missing persons investigations. Additionally, the grant will cover the acquisition of a 3D laser scanner for instant documentation of large items and crime scenes.

The largest portion of the grant will outfit every patrol car with dash cameras, which also function as license plate readers, including five years of maintenance and data storage. This technology will streamline digital evidence management and improve data sharing with local law enforcement and crime analysis centers. The grant award will be presented to the Steuben County Legislature for acceptance in June.
