The New York Mets (21-26) opened a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians (31-17) on Monday night at Progressive Field and fell 3-1 as the offense struggled.

Tomas Nido tied the game in the third inning with his second home run of the season, but that was the only run the Mets could muster as they went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, leaving five on base. Pete Alonso had two of the team’s six hits.

Tylor Megill allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings in his first big-league start in seven weeks. Josh Walker fired two scoreless before Jorge López recorded three outs in the eighth.

The Mets look to rebound on Tuesday when they hand the ball to Adrian Houser. The first pitch is slated for 6:10 p.m.
