Boaters will be required to take education classes starting next year

As National Safe Boating Week kicks off, the U.S. Coast Guard is reminding boaters to prioritize safety due to the still-cold lake waters despite the warm weather.

“There’s a lot of testing that goes into operating a motor vehicle, and you build up to it when you turn 16. There’s nothing like that in place for operating a boat on the weekend or just buying a boat and throwing it out on the water,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Matthew Riesberg of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Riesberg noted that starting next year, all New York State boaters will be required to complete some form of boating education. New York State offers safe boating courses throughout the summer to help boaters prepare.
