Emergency room wait times increasing at many Finger Lakes hospitals

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

As lawmakers debated state health care funding, patients in the Finger Lakes area experienced some of the longest emergency room wait times in New York. Between July 2022 and July 2023, Monroe County’s average ER wait time reached 274 minutes, while other counties in the region saw lower times.

During this period, some hospitals in the region saw significant increases in wait time. Here’s how many minutes patients spent, on average, in the emergency room across the Finger Lakes, along with a percentage representing the increase over the year prior.

  • Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua: 206 minutes (+6%)
  • Geneva General Hospital: 157 minutes (-2%)
  • Newark-Wayne Community Hospital: 217 minutes (+14%)
  • Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital: 94 minutes (no change)

Efforts are underway to address these delays. Strong Memorial Hospital is expanding its ER as part of a $557 million project, expected to be completed by 2027. However, systemic issues, including discharge delays and a lack of primary care, continue to drive high ER wait times across the state.
