The New York State Department of Labor reported a 7,700 increase in private sector jobs for April 2024, marking a 0.1% growth to a total of 8,352,800 jobs. This growth matches the national private sector job increase of 0.1% for the same month.

Over the past year, New York State’s private sector jobs rose by 1.6%, an addition of 131,500 jobs, slightly below the national increase of 1.7%. The state’s unemployment rate decreased from 4.3% in March to 4.2% in April 2024, while New York City’s rate dropped from 4.9% to 4.8%. The labor force participation rate also saw a slight decline from 61.4% to 61.3%.

These preliminary figures are based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and are subject to revision as more data becomes available. The unemployment rate and labor force statistics are derived from the Current Population Survey of about 3,100 households in the state.
