Gillibrand calls for additional funding for local fire departments as costs skyrocket

On Wednesday, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a news conference to announce her push for increased federal funding for local fire departments in the FY25 appropriations bill. She is advocating for a boost in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP).

The AFGP provides essential funding for local fire departments to purchase equipment, protective gear, and emergency vehicles, and to address staffing shortages. According to the senator’s office, additional funding would support fire departments across the state that currently rely on outdated equipment and face staffing challenges.

Gillibrand emphasized that this funding is crucial to ensure that both career and volunteer firefighters have the resources they need to stay safe while protecting their communities.
